A camp of soldiers or mountaineers, without the use of tents, is a bivouac. A bivouac is a place of rest, and also shelter, usually in the open, and uncovered by tents. Soldiers on their march and mountaineers during their climb, take rest and have refreshments in the bivouac.
- The bivouac at such a height did not afford the mountaineers the leisurely meal they hoped for, as the fierce wind and the approaching darkness forced them into their sleeping bags.
