blandishment (noun) flattery; praise (for getting people to do something).

When you want to persuade people to do something, one of the methods you use is to talk to them nicely, and say good things about them. They are blandishments. Salesman use blandishments to persuade customers to buy what they sell. A seller of clothes talks about how the clothes suit the customers, etc., just to make them buy it. When we expect others to do us a favor, we shower praises on them. They are blandishments.

  • Herman is not one to be flattered easily. So the blandishments of the used automobiles salesman went nowhere near making him buy any of the automobiles on sale.
  • Her blandishments, so full of nice words he hasn't heard said about him before, softened him towards her and now he was ready to do whatever she wanted.
