bolt (noun) a short bar sliding across a door to fasten it; a screw; a length of cloth wound around a piece of cardboard.

We shut the door and fasten it by means of a short bar sliding across the door, and fitting into a hold in the door post. It has a locking hook too. A screw without a point (unlike a screw nail), turning into a nut which when tightened can fasten things, is also a bolt. A length of cloth or any fabric wound around a piece of cardboard, and kept for sale in a shop is a bolt of fabric.

  • As the police kicked the door, on suspicion that something wrong going on in the room, the bolt gave way, and the door was thrown open.
  • The sales assistant in the department store cut from the bolt, the length of the cloth required by the customer.
  • The mechanic turned the bolt into the nut on the underside of the second sheet of metal to fasten the two sheets.
