bombastic (adj) (of language) pompous and high-sounding.

High-sounding and lengthy words and sentences in speech or in writing, impressing us as important but with little meaning, are bombastic. It is the language of those who wish to impress us with their scholarship but have little to convey.

  • The speaker in his attempt to impress his listeners with his mastery of language, made a bombastic speech. But while only a few understood his high-sounding words, the rest found the speech very tiring.
  • Bombastic language fails to serve the purpose of language, namely communication, as high-sounding words themselves do not convey anything meaningful.
