bowdlerize (verb) censor (books, films, etc.).
To bowdlerize is to expunge or remove the objectionable portions in a book or in a movie. Before it is allowed for public exhibition, a movie is subject to censor. That is, it is watched by the members of a censor board, who will order the removal of extremely violent, obscene, and offensive portions of the movie. If certain portions of a book are objectionable, their removal is ordered. All this is bowdlerizing.
- Clipped of the sequences which were bowdlerized, the movie held little interest for the adult viewers and that explains for its flopping at the box office.
- Some of the portions of the book were bowdlerized on the ground that it hurt the sentiments of certain sections of the society, and as a result, the book was reduced to almost half its original size.
