buccaneer (noun) one of a gang of pirates.

A member of a gang of sea robbers, that is, sailors, who attack ships and rob them, is a buccaneer. Buccaneers no longer operate on the seas, nowadays. In the past, when ships put out to sea with valuable cargo, there was always the threat of buccaneers attacking them.

  • The Atlantic in the past was infested with buccaneers, and merchant ships cruising along feared sudden attacks by them.
  • As bandits on land, were the buccaneers on the sea. Their only way of living was to attack ships and plunder them.
