buffet (verb) hit with force, or push about roughly from side to side.

When you buffet someone, you hit them with a lot of force, and push them roughly from side to side. The word is usually used with reference to winds and the waves of the sea buffeting a ship. When that happens, the ship is knocked at violently by the wind and the waves and pushed from side to side. The buffeting of the wind and waves may also wreck the ship.

  • The company is buffeted by the falling demand for its products on the one side, and serious differences among the members of the board of directors on the other.
