cadaverous (adj) like a dead body; thin, pale, and sickly.

If because of a disease, a person looks thin, pale, and sickly, they have a cadaverous appearance. A person looking debilitated and pale is cadaverous. The cadaverous appearance of a person can be shocking to their well-wishers because it is due to a serious illness.

  • Bedridden for three weeks because of jaundice, Sam appeared cadaverous, his face pale and shrunken, and his body thin.
  • The cadaverous face of John did not in the least surprise those who knew him to be down with cancer for three months. The disease had taken its toll, with John looking thin, pale, and very ill.
