calumny (noun) false reports, made and spread about a person to lower their reputation.

The false statement made by one person against another person to lower their reputation is a calumny. A calumny is a false and bad talk about a person spread to cause a bad opinion about them in others. 'No great man has ever escaped a calumny.' This means, there are always people spreading bad talk about great persons just to give a bad impression about them to the public.

  • That he has misbehaved towards a woman at the party, Harry says, is totally false, and that it is only a calumny spread by his enemies to damage his reputation.
  • 'No smoke without fire,' said Angelo, when Carl dismissed as totally false and a mere calumny the talk about his having been fired from job for swindling.
