cant (noun) insincere moral or religious statements; hypocrisy; jargon.

People indulge in cant when they talk of morals or religion without being serious about them or practicing them. Cant is just talking about religion or morals without the intention to put them into practice. Cant also means jargon, that is, words used with special meaning by the people of a profession. Cant, especially, is the jargon of thieves and criminals.

  • 'The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.' - How well said! All that we intend to do, we do not do, and sometimes cannot do, and that causes our indulging in cant, that is, our moral utterances which we do not mean to, and cannot practice.
  • The speaker at the Sunday school was speaking a lot of cant about pity, charity, etc., but everyone knew that he had never been known to give anything in charity.
