canter (verb) moderately fast, but not very fast movement ( of a horse).

If a horse moves almost at measured paces, fairly fast, but not at very great speed, the horse is on a canter. A cantering horse does not give us the impression of being in a hurry.

  • During the equine sports event, the horse moved in a canter whenever it had to jump over a stile, as its speed had to be restricted when it had to jump from within a short distance.
  • The winning horse led the other horses by such a long distance that coming down from a gallop to a canter it reached the finish by a margin of at least ten seconds.
