capacious (adj) spacious; of a large area.

A place is capacious if it has a lot of space where a large number of people can sit or move about freely, or if there is enough room to put a large number of things there. Some of the theatres and playhouses in New York are very capacious. That is, these theatres have enough room for a large number of audiences. A car or a bus is capacious, if it can carry a good number of passengers.

  • The sheer size of the theatre strikes one with awe, as does its auditorium, which is capacious enough for at least three thousand spectators.
  • Performing in such a capacious auditorium which can hold at least three thousand audiences has been the dream of Ann, and it was realized when she sang to a packed house there last summer.
  • The lounge in the air terminal, though very capacious, is crowded most of the day, as the air traffic there is very heavy.
