The hard shell that covers the backs of certain animals like the crustaceans - the crab, the tortoise, etc., which usually live in water is called carapace. The carapace is used for making jewelry and objects of art.

  • As the turtle lay ashore, the dog jumped at it and tried to attack it, but the carapace covering the back of the turtle was too hard for the dog's claws.
  • The carapace of the crab protects it from the smaller sea carnivores.
