caste (noun) one of the four main fixed classes into which the Hindu society in India is divided, and into which one is born.

The Hindu society is divided into four main groups called castes, and the groups do not intermingle. A person born into one caste cannot change their caste. The members of one caste have the same social status, and intermarriages among members of different castes are usually objected to.

  • Though the caste system was originally created on the basis of division of labor and duties, it gradually developed into a permanent and hereditary system, endangering the unity of the people, and thus exposing the country to foreign invasions.
  • The caste is still a predominant factor of Indian culture, and Indian politics are dominated by caste considerations, with the people of a caste voting for a candidate of their own caste, irrespective of party affiliations.
