categorical (adj) expressed clearly; stated emphatically and explicitly.

To be categorical about something is to be sure of something being correct. 'I am categorical that he is dodging work.' This means that I am certain that he is trying to avoid doing work. When an officer is certain that all his staff are honest, he is categorical about their honesty. When you are certain that something is correct, you are categorical about it being correct.

  • The government is categorical about the fairness of the price policy, as it claims that the decision has been arrived at after a lot of deliberation.
  • The university brochure is categorical that all students who apply for the programs offered by the university will be considered for financial assistance only on a merit basis.
