A cathartic is a medicine or a medicinal substance which can purge the bowels. A medicine which can cleanse our bowels or any passage in the body system, usually by causing loose motions and vomiting, through which the waste and the impurities in the body are cleansed, is a cathartic. Such a medicine or substance is also called a purgative. Castor oil is an example of a cathartic.

  • The Milk of Magnesia is a very common and effective purgative prescribed for old people who suffer from constipation.
  • In the olden days when medical science was not properly developed, purgatives were the most commonly prescribed medicines, because they were believed to clean the body of any infection or impurity by making the body throw out unwanted matter by way of motions and vomiting.
