catholic (adj) universal; liberal; broad-minded.

A person has a catholic outlook if they are broad-minded to tolerate different things, different systems of belief, and different ways of living from their own. Tolerance for new systems and beliefs, and for faiths other than one's own, is being catholic. A catholic person is very liberal and broad in outlook.

  • Britain pioneered secularism as it was the country which, in modern history, began to be catholic, though in a small way, by its tolerance of new faiths and new ways of thinking.
  • India, since ancient times has been very catholic, as can be seen in the number of non-Hindu races which have settled in the country and made it their home, and were allowed to live in peace and prosper.
