caucus (noun) a private meeting of a party or a faction to make policies or to elect candidates; the group of members forming a faction (a party within a party).

When a political party or a smaller group (of influential members) of the party meet to decide on policy matters or pick up candidates for an election, a caucus takes place. The members forming a small group within the party are also a caucus. The intention of such a group is to have their own way in party matters and influence the decisions of the party.

  • At the caucus of the Republican Party, at the opening of the Congress, the members to represent the party on the various Congressional committees have been elected.
  • The members of the party caucus are very intent on having candidates of their choice, and at least some among themselves, nominated as the candidates of the party for the elections.
