cede (verb) yield; surrender (area, title, right, etc.).

When a country gives away some of its territory, especially under force, to some other country, it cedes the territory to the other country. When a person, under force, agrees to surrender his power, right, etc., to others, they cede their power, right, etc.. Spain, for example, had to surrender Cuba to the US. That is, Spain was forced to cede Cuba to the US.

  • Hong Kong, which had been ceded to Britain by the Chinese rulers in the 19th century, was restored to China by Britain a few years ago.
  • After the defeat of Germany in World War II, it had to cede East Germany to the USSR, under the control of which East Germany remained for long.
