celibate (adj) unmarried, not having sex with anybody.

If a person is celibate, they are unmarried, and more importantly, avoid having sex, especially for religious reasons. If a person does not indulge in sex for some period, they are celibate for that period. Priests of the Roman Catholic Church are required to be celibate. Nuns are also required to be celibate. Celibate people never have sexual pleasures.

  • Christian nuns and priestesses of some other faiths have to vow to lead celibate lives, before they are admitted into the religious order, because of the belief that sex and marriage might corrupt the order.
  • The extreme belief that sex, even in moderation, might have a corrupting influence on religious practices is the reason why nuns are required to vow to be celibate.
