centurion (noun) an ancient Roman military officer who commanded a hundred soldiers.

Ancient Rome had a highly organized and efficient army. It had a number of divisions, each of them consisting of one hundred soldiers. The commander of a division of a hundred soldiers was called a centurion.

  • The centurions of the Roman army were known for their military prowess, and for their commanding abilities.
  • The position of centurion was not always given on the basis of a soldier's fighting ability. Sometimes the status of the family of his birth also played a part.
