ceremonious (adj) very formal; insisting on rules of behavior and procedure.

When you behave very formally, that is, follow the strict rules of behavior suitable for an occasion, you are ceremonious. For example, if you are particular about changing clothes to suit a change in occasion, you are ceremonious. If, for example, while calling others, talking or inviting them to your place, you follow accepted procedures, you are very ceremonious. When you are ceremonious, you appear affected, that is, a bit artificial. People do not feel at ease with you.

  • Henry is too ceremonious and even on ordinary occasions behaves very formally and uses a formal language even with his friends.
  • To express his protest against the new taxation policy, Tom ceremoniously burnt a copy of the policy in public by throwing it in fire.
