cession (noun) the act of ceding; giving up (an area, a right, or a title).
If a country surrenders a territory to another country, as a condition for stopping war or attacks, the surrender is cession. It usually takes place after the fight. We have the example of the cession of Austria to Germany, that is, the giving away of the Austrian territory to Germany, making it a part of Germany. Honk Kong's cession to Britain in the 19th century, is the surrendering of Hong Kong by the Chinese rulers to Britain.
- Britain, during its colonial rule, forced a number of kingdoms in its colonies to a cession of their territories to it, and thus within a short time became the most extensive empire in world history.
- Though the Dutch were the first to set up a trade colony in India, the British, by their superior military might forced the Dutch to a cession of their territories to Britain, and in course of time, the Dutch had no territory left in India.
