chalice (noun) a goblet; a wine cup.

An ornate gold or silver cup, artistically shaped, and used to hold wine, especially at Christian religious ceremonies, is a chalice. In general, any cup for holding wine is a chalice. Chalices are a very common sight at royal and state banquets, as wine is served in them to the guests.

  • The wine at the banquet, the ambassador felt, was really excellent, but the chalice in which it was served appeared to him even better.
  • The chalices found at the sites of excavation, the archeologist thought, must have contained some of the choicest wines of the times and must have been relished by the people who had drunk from them.
