chasm (noun) a vast deep space between two high areas of rock; an abyss.
A wide deep space between two rising areas of ground is a chasm. Such chasms are formed when two rocky areas slope into a wide deep hole which is very dangerous, as it can be very deep. A difference of opinions, or of attitudes, separating two persons, or groups of persons is also a chasm. If, for example, the differences that develop between a wife and a husband cannot be bridged, there is a chasm separating them. That is, they may not get to understand or like each other again.
- As the tides rose high in the storm, the ship was pushed into the chasm between wave and wave and was lost.
- As the rock holding the mountaineer's rope slipped, he fell headlong into the dark, deep chasm, and was lost to view.
