cipher (noun) the figure of zero; a person considered worthless, or as of no importance; a secret code (code language).

The figure of zero is called a cipher. His marks are a cipher, that is, his score is nil. A person who is considered worthless, who need not be given any importance, and who, people feel, is not worth being considered a human being at all, is cipher. A person who is a cipher is just regarded as a nonentity. A secret code language in which highly confidential messages are conveyed is a cipher. Cracking the code is to understand the cipher.
