circuitous (adj) (of a route) roundabout.

When a stretch of a road is under repair, the traffic is diverted by another route, which is naturally longer than the straight road. Such a roundabout route is circuitous. If we for some reason avoid the direct route to a place, and take a roundabout route, it is circuitous. We skirt around a place when we take a circuitous route.

  • Expecting a traffic jam because of the weekend crowd, the picnickers took a roundabout and less crowded route to the sea front, and though it was circuitous, took them less time than normal to reach their destination.
  • Just to claim a higher fare, the taxi driver, noticing the tourists were strangers to the place, took them to the hotel by a circuitous route, lying that that was the shortest route.
