civil (adj) polite; courteous; connected with citizens.

When a person is civil there are polite and well-mannered. They give the impression of being civilized. Your conduct is civil if you're not rude, though you're not very affectionate either. Anything related to the citizens or to the people, as different from or not connected with military or religious matters is civil. Civil unrest is the disturbance caused by a group of people within a country, and a civil war is one between two groups of people of the same country. We also have civil cases which are different from criminal cases.

  • I met Charley after a long time and his polite but not very affectionate treatment of me showed that he was just being civil to me.
  • Neither the military services nor the church has any role in the conduct of elections in a democracy. Elections are purely a civil matter concerned with the citizens electing their government.
