clapper (noun) the striker of a bell, or the tongue of a bell.

The metal rod inside the bell which when struck against the sides of the bell makes it ring is the clapper. If the bells are very big and set up high so as to be heard very far, a rope is tied to the lower end of the clapper and pulled to strike the sides of the bell.

  • A bell without a clapper is as useless as a body without a heart or a vehicle without an engine. Obviously the bell cannot ring without the clapper.
  • 'Ding, dong, ding, dong,' sounded the bell, when the clapper inside the bell pulled by a rope hit the sides of the bell.
