clique (noun) a small number of people forming a group.
A small group of people who keep most of the time to themselves form a clique. They do not let others join them. They think they are special in some way. We find such cliques on campuses, organizations, political parties, etc.. In the same political party there may be a number of cliques, that is, a number of groups of like-minded people. A clique may be formed on the basis of ideology, personality clashes, ideological differences, etc..
- Senator Johnston belongs to the group of senators very close to the President. They form a clique which can influence the major decisions of the President.
- The Board of Directors of the company is dominated by the group which favors massive investments abroad, and experience has proved that this clique is right because their decisions have earned profits for the company.
