codicil (noun) an addition to a will; a supplement (to a will).

When after making a will, the person who makes it wants to change parts of it, or adds some provisions to it, they add a codicil to it in which all changes and additions are indicated. The codicil is thus a supplement to a will. Codicil may reword a portion of the will or add a few new points to it.

  • The codicil she added to her will has proved unfortunate for her second daughter, as it denies her the right to the house in the country, provided for in the will.
  • The will left by Smith appears to have been made by a mentally unstable person with confused thinking, as the codicil contradicts almost all the provisions in the will.
