cohabit (verb) (of a man and a woman) to live together without being married.
If a couple live together without being married, and still have sexual relationship, they cohabit. A man and a woman cohabit, if without getting married, they live together as though they were wife and husband, and have sex and even children. This is becoming more and more common in the Western countries, especially in the US. As a result, the number of unwed mothers is increasing and once the couple separates, the children are usually left without the care of a mother or of a father.
- John and Stella had cohabited for six years and during the period they were more loving to each other than a wedded couple, but just a year after they were married, they were separated.
