coincidence (noun) two or more ideas or incidents occurring at the same time.

When two or more events, appearing to be related, occur at the same time or to the same persons, there is a coincidence. 'What a coincidence! My date of birth happens to be the same as that of my brother; only the year is different.' This means that my date of birth and that of my brother are the same, surprisingly, only the year is different. 'The wife and husband are of a type. There is a perfect coincidence of ideas between the two.' This means, they both happen to have similar views and opinions.

  • It is a sad coincidence that the day proposed for the beginning of the college happened to be the day of the death of its founder.
  • Rarely do we come across such a coincidence of events. The date and month of Shakespeare's death, as it is usually believed, happen to be the same as the date and month of his birth too.
  • There can sometimes be no coincidence between the interests of private individuals, and a nation's welfare.
