colander (noun) a metal or a plastic bowl with holes.

A metal or a plastic bowl having holes at the bottom and on the sides to drain out water from any food item is a colander. While washing or after cooking vegetables, they are put in the colander to let the liquid flow out, leaving the vegetables alone in the colander. The colander is a common sight in any kitchen.

  • Food items like spaghetti or noodles have to be put in a colander before eaten, to separate the solid cooked item from the waste liquid.
  • You have to use a colander whenever you boil a food item, to drain out the liquid in which the food has been cooked.
