colossus (noun) a very large statue; anything very large or important; any great or important person.

A statue of very huge size is a colossus. The Statue of Liberty, for example, is very large, so it is a colossus. A very large building, built on a massive scale, is also a colossus of a building. A person who is very large is a colossus, as also a person who is very important, great, or famous in their field of activity. A tall and hefty man like Sylvester Stallone can also be described as a colossus in view of his large sized body. Similarly, a giant intellectual like Isaac Newton, or Einstein, is a colossus in physics.

  • An intellectual colossus like Isaac Newton appears only very rarely, but their great intellect and labor benefit humanity for hundreds of generations and improve the quality of human life.
  • Each of the columns in the colonnade at Acropolis in Greece is a colossus of a pillar. They stand very tall and massive, and impress us with their size.
