comeuppance (noun) a punishment or a bad happening that a person deserves.

When a person gets a punishment, which we feel they really deserve, they get their comeuppance. We are happy that they have been rightly punished, for the wrongs they have done. When a bad character in a movie is punished in the end, we feel that they have got what they deserve. That is, we are satisfied that they have had their comeuppance.

  • Most Americans must be feeling happy at the fate of Saddam Hussein, who got his comeuppance in the form of removal from office and detention.
  • Most villains in movies and stories do get their comeuppance in the end, as they are rightly punished for their villainy, but then, not all the damage they may have done is set right.
