complementary (adj) being in the nature of completing something; in combination of something, and making it more attractive; (math) (of angles) adding to 90 degrees.

When two persons are different, but together form an effective combination, of skills, qualities, or physical features, they are complementary to each other. For example, a soccer team can be successful if it has players with complementary abilities. The forwards must be fast and agile, while the defenders must be solid and energetic.

  • Nature meant man and woman to be complementary to each other. They are different and neither, alone, can function without the other. Their combination alone can carry the world forward.
  • The intelligences he lacked, his wife had in plenty, and while she tended to be lazy, he was very industrious. They were thus complementary to each other.
