concave (adj) (especially of lenses and mirrors) curved inward; hollow.
Anything concave has a surface curved inward forming a dip. A concave lens or a concave mirror is curved inwards, so has a hollow space. Any such feature, for example, a hillside curving inwards can be called concave. The space under a promontory, if curved inwards is concave. It offers shelter from sun and rain.
