concoct (verb) to make something, especially food or drink, by mixing different foods or drinks; plan, invent a story or an excuse, to deceive others.

When you concoct a drink, you combine different drinks which are not usually combined. To form a new food item by mixing different food items is to concoct. If you lie inventively or build up a story to explain something, say, your not attending a party or being late to it, you concoct a story.

  • When he ran short of food, he concocted a delicious eatable by mixing all the leftovers.
  • Jimmy is good at concocting. Remember how he concocted a story of his having been held by a traffic police, as a reason for his being late to the function and how we later knew it was all lies?
