confiscate (verb) seize; take away officially.

If as a punishment for tax evasion, the government takes away the property of the tax evader, the government confiscates their property. If a teacher confiscates any electronic gadget like a cell phone a pupil is using in the class, the teacher takes it away and will not perhaps return it. The government may order the property of the criminal to be confiscated, if the criminal is dodging arrest. That is, it may take away his property.

  • The government has confiscated the trucks and their load of explosives, which were being transported in the trucks without proper documents.
  • The properties of the terrorists responsible for the bomb blasts in the city have been confiscated by the government after obtaining from the court the necessary order for the seizure of the properties.
