conflagration (noun) a huge fire.

A huge fire causing a lot of destruction is a conflagration. A conflagration destroys a lot of buildings, forests, or lands. The large fire that engulfed the World Trade Centre in New York in the 9/11 incident was a conflagration that had a devastating effect.

  • In the conflagration that was set off by a small spark resulting from an electric short circuit a number of buildings were burnt down, but, fortunately, only a few lives were lost.
  • The gas leaking from the pipe caught fire as a lighted cigarette butt was dropped on it, and the fire soon developed into a conflagration burning down all the buildings in the area.
