confluence (noun) a point where two or more rivers join and flow together; (of movements, incidents, etc.) joining into one.

When two or more rivers flow together to form one river, there is a confluence. A confluence of two or more streams is their joining one another at some point and flowing together as one stream. 'A city built at the confluence of the two major rivers is assured of plenty of water supply.' That is, the city stands at the point where the two rivers join and flow in a single stream. When two or more movements or events of some importance join, or merge into one another, there is a confluence.

  • At the point of confluence of the rivers, the Ganga, the Jamuna, and the Saraswathi at the city of Allahabad in India, we can see the two distinct colors of the waters of the Ganga and of the Jamuna and feel underneath, the current of the Saraswathi.
  • England benefited from the confluence of the Renaissance, a cultural movement, and the Reformation, a religious movement, during the 15th and the 16th centuries. They converged to accelerate the progress of England.
