conjecture (noun) guess.

A conjecture is a guess. Something that we imagine to be the reason or the result for something else that has happened is conjecture. An opinion or an idea formed by guessing is also a conjecture. 'Her conjectures that he has arrived has proved true.' This means that she has guessed aright his arrival.

  • As the evidence was neither conclusive nor persuasive, the prosecution attorney based his arguments on the mere conjecture that the murder was for gain.
  • As Jane was prejudiced against her rival Mary, she had a conjecture that the attempt to kill her had been plotted by Mary.
