consanguinity (noun) relationship by blood.

Relationship among people born in the same family is consanguinity. Siblings, that is, brothers and sisters, because they are born in the same family, are related by consanguinity. A set of people having the same ancestor have consanguinity. An uncle and a nephew have consanguinity because they are related by having the same ancestor.

  • The parenthood of a child can be easily determined nowadays by tests of consanguinity. A blood test can reveal the consanguinity of one person with another.
  • The doctor advised the couple against their marriage because of their consanguinity. He warned them that their being related by blood might result in their children being born with deformities.
