conscript (noun) a person forced to join armed forces.

During wartime, if necessary, young and able-bodied persons, especially men, are forced by the government to join the armed forces for the defense of the country. Such persons are conscripts. A period of compulsory military service is prescribed for all young persons of a certain age group. All such are conscripts. In Britain during the World War II, and in the US during the Vietnam War, everyone of a certain age group was a conscript.

  • A large number of US young men and women forced to serve the armed forces as conscripts in the Vietnam War, lost their lives on foreign soil, fighting someone else's war.
  • There were many conscientious objectors who declared themselves so, to the war in Vietnam, but not all of them did so on principle, but just to avoid becoming conscripts.
