consort (noun) a husband or a wife, especially of a reigning queen or a king.

The husband or the wife of a ruling queen or a king is called a consort. The royal family looks for a consort when the prince or princess is to be married. Princess Diana was the consort of Prince Charles of England.

  • The prince consort of the reigning queen of the country was not of royal blood, but declared raised to the status of a prince, just before the wedding.
  • Queen Elizabeth I of England stayed a virgin; many who aspired to be her consort either lost their lives or did not succeed.
