consort (verb) to move with; to be in the company of.

When you consort with someone, you move with or are found in the company, especially of undesirable people. You consort with gamblers and drunkards, when you spend time with them. When your friend spends time with your enemy he consorts with your enemy.

  • Oliver Goldsmith, the genius and master prose writer of English literature, is said to have consorted with undesirable persons of all kinds, with whom a writer of his status would not usually mix.
  • He consorted with rich men having vices and in the process he acquired their vices and lost the little property he had.
