conspiracy (noun) plot (unlawful).

When two or more people plan secretly to remove or assassinate a ruler, to overthrow a government, to harm a person in power, or to seize political power, their plan is a conspiracy. They plot the conspiracy. A conspiracy is an act of treachery, that is, an action that causes danger to people in power or a government. When people plot a conspiracy, they enter into a conspiracy.

  • A conspiracy was suspected behind the assassination of President Kennedy, but it could not be proved, as the alleged assassin was shot dead while being taken to court.
  • As King Richard I of England was always busy with the crusades, his younger brother and the Norman lords plotted his removal, but their conspiracy did not succeed.
