contention (noun) point of argument; a dispute.

A point that you make in your argument is your contention. Your contention that the rise in the number of unwed mothers is not good for the society is your point that it is not good. 'The government's contention that inflation has come down is not correct.' This means that the government's arguments about reduced inflation is not correct. A matter of dispute is also a contention or a point of contention. 'The boundary between the two countries is still a matter of contention.' That is, the boundary dispute between them is still unsettled.

  • James's contention is that women should be encouraged to do jobs that they have not done so far. His point is that given a chance, they can prove as good as men.
  • The point of contention before the government is which of the two companies should be given the right to explore oil in the river basin. The opinion is equally divided in the government circles.
