contest (noun) a competition; a struggle (usually for power).

When you enter a contest, you compete with others for a price or an award. In a singing contest, singers compete with one another, to win a prize or an award. We have debate contests and beauty contests. A fight for power is a contest. A contest for a seat in the Senate from a constituency is a fight among two or more candidates for the membership of the Senate. A fight for leadership is a struggle to be selected as or elected a leader.

  • The election to the Presidency of the US early this year witnessed a keen contest between George Bush and John Kerry.
  • The Miss World and the Miss Universe beauty contests attract beautiful women from all over the world, each of them competing with the others for the titles.
